Roundup for Week 39 of 2022

INTERVIEW WITH THE FUCKING VAMPIRE. Holy shit, I did not expect this reboot (or whatever) to be so godfuckingdamn good. I am enthused. ENTHUSED, I SAY. It’s really fucking gay and I love it.

These posts are my weekly periodic 'round up' of the things I've been up to this week lately.

I’ve decided to do a periodical (weekly to start, we’ll see how that goes 🤣) Fandom Roundup type thing, where I’m sort of accountable to myself with what I’m reading, writing, watching, but also collect some fandom happenings from around Social Media.

Caveat Lector: I’m chronically online on twitter, and I get involved in far too much discourse wank. So feel free to skip the twitter part, no hard feelings ❤️

READING

Corpse reviver by applecrumbledore   10/10 would absolutely read again.

Also, Fire & Blood by GRRM cos GoT ate my face.

Writing

I suck. Game of Thrones ate my face. Also half the household had covid this week and because my spouse is isolating in our room I’ve been on the couch and it’s fucking uncomfortable. Lack of sleep does not enable me to use my brain very well.

Watching

I finished Game of Thrones. Yeah so the entire series is a wild ride. The storytelling is AFUCKINGMAZING. I don’t get why people were all like ‘the ending sucked’ and raging about it. The ending made sense. Dany’s decent into madness made sense, and the solution made sense. While I wanted Jon Snow to take the throne, well, there wasn’t much of a throne to take, much less much of a city (I’m sorry, Dany got what was coming to her, jesus), and we all know that the Unsullied or the Dothraki would never have stood for that. So he ended up back where he began, and that’s okay. I’m absolutely satisfied with the ending.

You know, though, I expected GoT in general to be wildly problematic (because of the way it’s described online and IRL) and I expected to be raging at the TV almost constantly. I dunno, maybe I’m jaded in terms of the media I consume? Maybe I just enjoy gory, no-holds-barred, ‘problematic’ media.

The reason I started watching GoT in the first place was because I’ve been watching House of the Dragon. Dragons are cool. So is the fuckery of these relationships. Now I’m reading Fire & Blood.

Social Media

The ‘ao3 should be more like tiktok’ wank continues:

And on Tumblr, many fans got prematurely overexcited when the site announced new ‘Community Labels’ but didn’t make it clear that, no, they weren’t rolling back the porn ban. It didn’t help that a staff member wrongly confirmed the assumption.

Other Stuff

I just discovered Fandom Coders.

Fandom Coders is a community where tech professionals and coding hobbyists alike can share and discuss their coding projects, find help getting started or unblocked, and learn new skills and concepts. Among others goals, Fandom Coders aims to increase coding literacy in fandom, and to connect fandom builders with each other to create and shape the fandom internet they want to see.

All fans used to be able to code at least a little, you know, enough to italicise their shit or whatever. Nowadays, people freak out at the HTML editor on AO3. If fandom is going to survive and grow we need more coders so we can support projects like AO3, the OTW, and any future ‘by fans, for fans’ platforms we need (and we will need them, when mainstream platforms are sanitised to death).
